Barefoot Pinot Grigio: Wine Review

Barefoot Pinot Grigio wine review by Mike Belobradic.

Sometimes you just want a white wine that you can enjoy on its own or with food and that won't break the bank.

Barefoot Pinot Grigio is a white wine made from Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris grapes grown in the Napa Valley, California. Barefoot began in 1965 and has long positioned itself as a brand that should not be taken too seriously. It is well known as a winery that produces some very good quality and very accessible wines.

Barefoot Pinot Grigio Overview

As a Pinot Grigio wine, Barefoot Pinot Grigio is a very pale yellow wine (almost straw colored) that comes in at 12% ABV. (Barefoot also makes a lower alcohol light version Pinot Grigio.) Barefoot likes to use the word "approachable" when describing their philosophy about winemaking and this Pinot Grigio definitely lives up to that description.

Barefoot Pinot Grigio Aroma

Barefoot Pinot Grigio has a medium-intensity aroma. After a swirl and a sniff, you get a very bright and fruity smell, with a hint of florals.

What I noticed most (in addition to the overall very pleasant and bright smell) were the aromas of pineapple and fresh baked bread in the form of a slight (but pleasant) hint of yeast. There is possibly a bit of peach lingering in the background, if I really try hard.

All in all, the aroma is a very pleasant and inviting first interaction with this wine. If you could capture fun and approachable in a wine smell, this would be it.

Barefoot Pinot Grigio on First Sip

On first sip, Barefoot Pinot Grigio is light-medium bodied, fruity and very mildly sweet (left of center if you had a dry to sweet scale). It is not noticeably acidic and is very well balanced overall.

The taste has a bit of a citrus component that I did not particularly get in the aroma, but that works well. I also got a hint of a taste of Granny Smith apple, which I love and so that was an enjoyable addition.

The finish of Barefoot Pinot Grigio is medium and quite nicely mirrors the overall flavors of the wine.

Barefoot Winery Tasting Notes

For the sommeliers out there, Barefoot describes this wine as follows:

“Barefoot Pinot Grigio offers all the flavours of tart green apples with fresh, white peaches. Accented with floral blossoms and citrus aromas.”

Final Thoughts

Barefoot Pinot Grigio is an all-around great wine for just about any occasion. Whether you're sitting by the pool, enjoying a glass after work, or serving to friends with dinner, Barefoot Pinot Grigio will fit perfectly.

Sometimes you just want a white wine that you can enjoy on its own or with food and that won't break the bank. Barefoot Pinot Grigio definitely fits the bill. It's a light, fun, everyday sort of wine that comes with no wine snobbery attached, which is exactly how I imagine Barefoot would want it.

I have tasted much more expensive vintage Pinot Grigios that pale in comparison to this wine. Barefoot Pinot Grigio is what I would describe as a good value and good quality wine. It is definitely a very approachable wine and is worthy of a spot in any home wine rack. It’s the kind of wine that both regular wine drinkers and casual wine drinkers can both enjoy.

Barefoot Wines is located in Modesto, California.
