Trius Red.

A bold—yet bright—well-balanced and complex red wine

Trius Red 2020 is a blended red wine made from several grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. If you like a bold red wine with a big personality, read on for my plain language wine review of Trius Red.

Trius Red: Overview

Trius Red is a medium- to full-bodied wine. It has a fairly strong flavor, which is to be expected based on the grape varieties in the bottle. It is a very deep and dark color—almost black—which is quite intriguing.

Trius Red Aroma

Before sipping, I gave Trius Red a swirl in the glass to see what aromas I could detect. It introduces itself with a medium aroma—not too strong, but definitely not a faint aroma. I expected it to be stronger based on the grape varieties, but instead I found it to be pleasantly bright and fresh. I would describe it as faintly floral or fruity, but not sweet smelling.

Trius Red on first sip

On first sip, there's quite an explosion of flavor.

For comparison purposes, Trius Red is not as musky as a full Cabernet Franc (it is a blend after all), but it has a very rich, bright and slightly fruity flavor profile. This wine is on dry end of the wine spectrum.

On the back end of tasting, after a moment or two, there are deeper flavor elements. I can see where Trius is going with their own tasting notes (see below) where they mention charred wood and coffee bean. The tannins in this wine are definitely notable and present in the lingering aftertaste (relatively normal for a red wine), but they stop short of being what I could consider to be too bitter.

The alcohol taste is there as well (the wine comes in at 13.5% ABV) and Trius Red has a moderately acidic note (but is not sour tasting). Neither of those elements dominates or detracts, as the wine is well balanced. It is not sweet by any means, but all in all has a bright, deep and enjoyable flavor.

Trius Winery Tasting Notes

For the sommeliers out there, Trius notes a

"bouquet of ripe black currant, black cherry, vanilla, smoke, oak, and baking spice, along with a touch of charred wood and coffee bean" and "fruit forward flavours of black currant and blackberry accented by spice and oak. Black tea, black fruits, oak, spice, and cocoa powder linger beautifully on the finish."

Final Thoughts

If you enjoy a bold—yet bright—well-balanced and complex red wine, Trius Red is an excellent option to try. It would be a very solid addition to any wine rack.

I will purchase Trius Red again.

Trius Winery is located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
